Gurgling Drains or a Bubbling Toilet in Whittier

A gurgle now and then is not a crisis, but it is your plumbing telling you something. Gurgling means air is being forced through the water in a drain trap, and the most common reason is a partial clog building up somewhere in the line.

Serving La Habra, Fullerton, La Mirada, Whittier and nearby cities.

What you might notice

  • A gurgling sound from a sink or tub when another fixture drains
  • The toilet bubbles or the water level moves when the washer drains
  • Gurgling along with slow drains
  • Occasional sewer smell near the gurgling drain

Likely causes

  • A partial clog in a branch line or the main sewer line
  • A blocked or poorly working vent pipe (the vent is what lets air into the drain system)
  • Build-up that narrows the pipe so air gets trapped behind the water
  • Tree roots starting to grow into the main line

Safe things to try first

  1. Notice which fixtures gurgle and what you were running at the time. This helps us find the problem faster.
  2. If only one sink gurgles, clean its stopper and P-trap like a normal slow drain.
  3. Run water in each fixture and see whether any are also slow.
  4. Do not climb on the roof to check vents yourself. Leave that to a pro.
Why we don’t recommend chemical drain cleaners: Skip the chemical drain cleaners. They are strong caustics or acids that can burn skin and eyes, can damage older pipes and fittings, and often only eat a small hole through the clog. When they do not work, the drain is left full of chemical water that can splash you or whoever opens the line next. Never mix drain products, because some combinations give off toxic fumes.

If water starts rising or you see sewage, stop and call. Don’t take apart anything you’re not comfortable putting back together.

When to call a pro

  • Gurgling happens along with slow drains in more than one room
  • The toilet bubbles when the washer or tub drains
  • You also notice a sewer smell
  • It has been getting worse over a few weeks

What Rooter Champion does

We find where the restriction is, clear the line, and use our camera to show you what was causing it. Our $55 drain cleaning includes a free camera inspection. If the camera shows roots or damage in the main line, you see the video and we talk through options. If the cause looks like a vent problem instead of a clog, we will tell you that too.

Gurgling in several drains is often an early sign of tree roots in the sewer line or a main line clog. Local to us? See drain service in Whittier.

Common questions

Is a gurgling toilet an emergency?

Not usually by itself. But if it comes with slow drains or water rising in a tub, treat it as a main line clog and stop using water.

Can a vent cause gurgling?

Yes. Drains need air from the vent pipe to flow smoothly. If the vent is blocked, drains can pull air through the traps instead, which causes gurgling.

Will the gurgling go away on its own?

Sometimes it seems to, but the build-up that causes it usually keeps growing. It is cheaper to clear a partial clog than a full backup.
