What you might notice
- Dirty water or sewage coming up in a tub, shower or floor drain
- Sewage flowing out of the outdoor cleanout cap
- Toilets that will not flush and are filling with dirty water
- A strong sewage smell along with rising water
Likely causes
- A fully blocked main sewer line, often from roots, wipes or grease
- A broken or collapsed section of sewer pipe
- Less often, a blockage in the city sewer main. If neighbors have the same problem, call your city's public works line too.
Safe things to try first
- Stop using all water: no flushing, showers, laundry, dishwasher or running faucets.
- Keep children and pets away from the area.
- Avoid touching sewage. If you must, wear rubber gloves and boots, and wash well afterward.
- Do not touch outlets, cords or appliances that are near standing water.
- Open windows for fresh air if you can do it safely.
- Take photos for your records and your insurance.
If water starts rising or you see sewage, stop and call. Don’t take apart anything you’re not comfortable putting back together.
When to call a pro
- Now. Call 714-305-9263. Sewage is a health hazard, and the backup gets worse every time water is used.
What Rooter Champion does

We clear the main line from the cleanout so the sewage can drain, then run a camera through the line so you can see what caused the blockage. You get to watch the footage, and we explain what we found and what your options are. Cleaning up sewage-soaked flooring, drywall or carpet is a separate job for a water-damage cleanup company.
After the line is cleared, a camera shows whether tree roots or a broken pipe caused it. Local to us? See sewer service in Fullerton.
Our $55 drain cleaning includes a free camera inspection, so you can see the problem for yourself. Rooter Champion is family-owned, licensed and insured (CA Lic. #1063585).
Common questions
Should I book online for a sewage backup?
No. Call us at 714-305-9263 so we can talk you through it and get you on the schedule as quickly as we can.
Can I pour a chemical drain cleaner into the backed-up drain?
No. It will not clear a main line blockage, and it turns the standing water into a chemical hazard for you and for the technician who has to open the line.
How do I know if it is the city's problem or mine?
If your neighbors are backing up too, the city sewer main may be blocked, so call your city's public works line. If it is only your home, the blockage is usually in your own sewer line.
What customers say
5.0 stars from 52 Google reviews on our La Habra profile.
“I was in a plumbing crisis with flooding from a sewer line. Another plumber’s quote would’ve required a second mortgage. I got a second opinion with Rooter Champion — David was excellent, professional, and gave me an honest assessment at a fair price. Look no further!”
“David was great — cautious, took extra time to locate the issue, ran a couple snakes before the big one, and cleaned up all the mess. Didn’t try to oversell. One of the best plumbers I’ve ever met.”
