What you might notice
- Water pools around a patio, driveway or yard drain after rain or watering
- Water runs into the garage or toward the house
- The drain grate is full of mud or leaves
- Water bubbles up from the drain instead of going down
Likely causes
- Dirt, leaves, mulch and grass clippings washed into the drain
- Tree and shrub roots growing into the drain pipe
- A crushed or broken section of pipe, often under a driveway or path
- Not enough slope in the line, so water sits instead of flowing
Safe things to try first
- Lift off the grate and scoop out the dirt and leaves by hand (wear gloves).
- Clean out the catch basin under the grate if there is one.
- Run a garden hose into the drain to see whether water flows away or backs up.
- Keep mulch, leaves and grass clippings away from drains.
If water starts rising or you see sewage, stop and call. Don’t take apart anything you’re not comfortable putting back together.
When to call a pro
- Water still backs up after you cleared the grate and basin
- Water pools near the foundation or gets into the garage
- The drain floods after every rain
- You suspect roots or a broken pipe
What Rooter Champion does
We clear yard, patio and area drain lines with hydro jetting, which washes out dirt, leaves, roots and silt instead of just poking a hole through them. Then we use our camera to check for roots, crushed sections or low spots. You see the footage, and if part of the line needs repair we explain the options before scheduling anything.
Roots get into yard drain pipe the same way they get into sewer lines. If the smell is sewage, see sewer smell. Local to us? See drain service in La Habra.
Yard drain hydro jetting is priced by estimate. Call us or request an estimate and we’ll give you a price first. Rooter Champion is family-owned, licensed and insured (CA Lic. #1063585).
Common questions
Is my yard drain connected to the sewer?
Usually not. Most yard and area drains carry rain water to the street or another outlet, separate from the sewer line. The camera can confirm where yours goes.
Why does my patio drain only flood when it rains hard?
A partly clogged or undersized line can handle light water but not a heavy rush. Hydro jetting the line and checking it with a camera shows whether it needs more.
Can roots get into yard drain pipes?
Yes. Thin-walled drain pipe near trees and shrubs is easy for roots to get into, especially at joints.
